FaCE Scale

Facial Clinimetric Evaluation: a 15-item patient-reported measure of facial impairment and disability, with a total and six domain scores.

Enter the patient's response to each item. Items left unanswered are excluded from that domain's score.

Facial movement, in the past week

How often, in the past week

How much they agree, in the past week

Method

Score = ((sum of answered items − n) ÷ (4 × n)) × 100

Each item is scored 1 (worst) to 5 (best), and n is the number of items answered in that domain. Scores run from 0 (worst) to 100 (best) for the total and for each domain:

  • Facial movement: items 1, 2, 3
  • Facial comfort: items 4, 6, 13
  • Oral function: items 11, 12
  • Eye comfort: items 5, 7
  • Lacrimal control: item 8
  • Social function: items 9, 10, 14, 15

The published scoring appendix lists the facial comfort items as 4, 6, and 16; there is no item 16, and item 13 (facial tension, pain, or spasm) is the remaining comfort item, so 13 is used here. Items are paraphrased for entering responses; for patient administration and research, use the original instrument.
