GILLS Score
Five preoperative factors that predict failure of tongue-lip adhesion in infants with Robin sequence. Check every factor present.
Method
GILLS score = 1 point for each factor present (0 to 5)
The score was derived from a retrospective review of infants with Robin sequence treated with tongue-lip adhesion (TLA) for airway obstruction. A score of 2 or less was associated with successful TLA, while scores of 3 or more were associated with failure, defined as needing a further airway procedure such as tracheostomy.
The score was developed for TLA. It has been studied in infants undergoing mandibular distraction, but it was not designed for that procedure. Airway decisions in Robin sequence depend on polysomnography, airway endoscopy, feeding, and growth, and should be made by a multidisciplinary team.
